Halloween 2016

Halloween 2016

Become the evil laboratory assistant that youve always dreamt of being in this free-to-play, repeatable Halloween event.

Join Dr Fenkenbrain for four D&D-type activities as you help create a monster. Then, explore the outskirts of a darkened Falador as you gather the parts to make your very own mechanical pet.

Find out all the details in this news post along with any other announcements and stream info.

Halloween Event 2016

Requirements

None. This event is entirely free to play.

Recommended

There are no special stat requirements or gear, but there might becomplications...so bringing a little food might be a good idea.

How to start

Head to a new portal outside the Invention Guild, north-east of Falador, and zip through to Dark Falador.

Build a Monster

Meet up with your old pal Dr Fenkenbrain on the other side of the Halloween portal and talk to him to begin.

Lend the doc a hand (and probably a few more body parts to boot) as you work to create a replacement for his failed zombies.

There are four activities to take part in every day body-part sorting, driving a conveyor belt with a bicycle, divine entanglement and generator charging.

The doc assures us that any deaths that may incur will be safe ones so have fun!

Rewards

Helping to build the monster will earn you grey matter which you can use to buy Halloween-themed rewards from Dr Fenkenbrain.

These include a lightning rod hat, a creeptastic pet and the Mad Professor title.

Upon your first completion of this years event, you will also be rewarded with last years Halloween emotes and music, if you missed those.

You can repeat this years event as much as you like to earn more grey matter, but you will earn the most on your first completion each day. Note that the concluding stage of the event also only occurs on your first completion of the day.

Mechanical Spider Pet Hunt

When youre done, explore the area outside of Fenkenbrains lab to locate eight pieces of a mechanical spider pet. Assemble them and youll be able to purchase the pet in the events reward shop.

This event will run for two weeks until update on November 7th.

The Community Spotlight - 10/22/2016

No Caption Provided

Hello and welcome to the latest edition of the Giant Bomb Community Spotlight and I, @zombiepie, am once again honored to be your host this week! Well, did a great deal happen this week! Not only has Nintendo pegged their future on the console/handheld blurring Nintendo Switch, but some big releases and news hit the site. Battlefield 1 and Sid Meier's Civilization VI were the big releases that had the community clamoring on the forums. Not only that, but the announcement of Red Dead Redemption 2 had the Giant Bomb userbase practically buzzing about what they wanted to see in the game. Oh and the staff also suffered another Mario Party-induced Sisyphean torment. With that, let's review the site related housekeeping:

  • For any of you experiencing issues with the Giant Bomb Roku App, Mr. Rorie recently published an update about the issue.
  • Users of the PocketCasts application have been reporting that premium podcasts are not appearing on the app. This is an issue on PocketCasts's end.
  • @jdp83 converted the staff's Mario Party Party 7 theme sing-along into an infinite loop. What hath God wrought?

Gears of War 4 Updates Will Add Harsher Quitter Penalties and Lots More Changes

Gears of War 4 developer The Coalition has published a list of some of the "top-level items" that it is working on fixes for. In a forum post, community manager Adam Fletcher thanked fans for their feedback and said the studio hopes to fix these problems and others through upcoming patches.

One such item is balancing for the Hammerburst weapon. This has been a "big pain point" for players, Fletcher said. He didn't say exactly how the Hammerburst will change, but noted that online __play has been "dominated by long-range combat" with the weapon and that a tuning update will address this.

Another issue that The Coalition is hoping to fix is a problem where matches start without a full roster of players. This issue is "pretty concerning," Fletcher said. "There may be a quick fix that we can do on the backend to address this but it may require some additional work that would come in a later title update," he said. "We will do what we can to mitigate and correct this one as soon as possible."

The Coalition has also heard players' calls for harsher penalties for people who quit mid-match. A future update will include stricter penalties, though they were not detailed, and it sounds like this might not happen very soon. "Unfortunately, this requires a bit more legwork but we are seeing if we can prioritize and have this come out sooner rather than later. We expect this in a future title update but not the next large one," Fletcher explained.

No Caption Provided
Gallery image 1 Gallery image 2 Gallery image 3 Gallery image 4 Gallery image 5 Gallery image 6 Gallery image 7 Gallery image 8 Gallery image 9 Gallery image 10

Additionally, a future update for Gears of War 4 will add competitive/core lobbies, but since it requires an "extensive amount of work," you shouldn't expect it soon. Fletcher also acknowledged the concerns some have raised about Gears of War 4's Gears Pack system, which involves microtransactions.

"We are looking into ways of improving the experience for all users and we are also looking at additional opportunities to help players obtain packs," he said. "We will keep you posted on these notes in the near future."

Additionally, The Coalition confirmed that it will experiment with "social crossplay weekends," during which it will gather data to determine what else it can do with cross-play between Xbox One and PC. "We will also be looking into offering bonus XP in specific modes that will be constantly rotating either each day or on a weekly basis to help incentivize people to try out each of our different game modes. This would be for both platforms Xbox One and PC," Fletcher said.

Another item being addressed in a future update has to do with backfilling in Horde matchmaking. Right now, if someone drops out, you can invite someone else, but only if they're on your friends list. The Coalition said it will "continue looking into this" to see what else it can do. For now, the developer wants to remind players that they can invite people if someone drops out; this is a big deal because Horde matches can go on for a long time and if someone leaves, you might be in trouble.

You can see more of the "top-level" items and descriptions written by Fletcher below. He also noted that there are "many more" topics that The Coalition is aware of that it could address in the future.

The Coalition did not provide any kind of a timetable for when these issues will be addressed.

Gears of War 4 Changes and Fixes:

Footsteps of teammates much louder than opponents

  • We believe DeeBee footstep audio seems to be in a good place based off of feedback from you all. We are looking at increasing human and swarm footstep audio. This will be in a future title update.

Gnasher shots firing but ammo not depleting and registering

  • We have a fix for this in our next large Title Update

0% / 100% UI notifications

  • This is tied to Unreal rounding numbers up and down and thus confusing people with the numbers they are displaying. We are going to see if we can address this so it comes across a bit more clear on what your true damage and damage taken is. This will occur in a future update.

KOTH/Execution Time Adjustments

  • Execution I believe is currently set for 10 minutes. That’s long! We are going to readjust this so players aren’t stalemating for long periods of time. KOTH will be reduced to 1 round in social and we will listen to additional dialogue from Core players if this needs to be reduced down or not. We expect these changes in the next Title Update if not sooner.

Windows Insiders not being able to play

  • There is now a new Insider Build that corrects this issue. (Build 14951). You can read more about it here.

Ranks not displaying for other users in Squad

  • We are aware of this. We want to display ranks for other users in the squad. This will be in a future Title Update, but will not be present in the next one.

Horde Class Icons in Scoreboard

  • We are also aware of this one. We want people to be aware of other classes they are working with in-game. This will be in a future Title Update, but will not be present in the next one.

PC Mics not working correctly at all times

  • We are looking into this one and have a future Title Update that will address this issue.

Horde Score abuse issues

  • We have received a few reports on this and have fixes coming related to this. We will probably also look into wiping leaderboards after this is done to ensure players can compete to achieve legitimate scores.

Grenade spawning issue

  • We have this issue logged and will have a fix for this in a future Title Update.

Players sometimes leaving maps

  • We have this issue logged and will have a fix for this in a future Title Update. Players caught abusing this will be subject to disciplinary action including suspensions and bans.

This Fan-Made Pokemon Commercial Is Great, Might Make You Cry

Pokemon's 20th anniversary brought on a Super Bowl ad that tugged at our heartstrings, and now a fan-made commercial is tugging even harder.

Filmmaker John Wikstrom reached his hands into the nostalgia bucket to bring back childhood memories of throwing cartridges into Game Boys, admiring your collection of Pokemon cards, and evolving your beloved monsters. The commercial follows one man as a Pokemon-obsessed kid and then a boring adult, who rediscovers his love for the monster-collecting game.

It concludes on a shot of the man smiling at Pokemon Sun and Moon, with the words, "You evolved. So did we," capping off the trailer. You can watch it in the embed above.

This isn't the first video game-related short film that Wikstrom has created. You might remember one that revolved around the emotional story of a kid finding an old Xbox he and his late father played together. It's quite good as well, and we definitely recommend giving it a watch.

If you're looking forward to Pokemon Sun and Moon, you'll be able to pick it up for the 3DS on November 18. You can download and __play a demo of the upcoming game from the handheld's eShop now.

GameSpot recently got the opportunity to interview Pokemon developers Junichi Masuda and Shigeru Ohmori about legendaries, Pokemon Go, and whether or not they should reset the number of Pokemon.

Gears of War 4 Multiplayer Myths Confirmed and Busted in New Video

Gears of War 4 is the latest subject of YouTuber DefendTheHouse's Myths series, where it tests theories to see if they're true or not. In this video, they test collision factors of Dropshot mines and the ricocheting ability of Torque Bow shots.

Multiple test cases for Dropshot Mines are showcased, including whether they can collide with each other, a bullet, or a melee attack. Unfortunately for those wanting to shoot the mines out of the air, the only theory that was confirmed was that you can knock a Dropshot Mine away from you with a melee attack.

The video also tests Torque Bow shots for teammate-ricocheting capability. The player aims their shot at a static teammate's unmentionables and ends up ricocheting the shot towards the feet of a completely still enemy player, blowing them up in the process. It doesn't seem like it'll work very well in a real multiplayer match, but it's still cool to see happen.

A couple other myths are tested, and you can see them all here or in the video embed above. DefendTheHouse has busted multiple myths in games like Overwatch and The Division. Some of our favourite videos include whether Mei can block Overwatch victory poses with her Ice Wall ability and testing the ability to shoot The Division players who are in the Dark Zone from out of bounds.

Gears of War 4 is available now for Xbox One and PC and scored a 7/10 in GameSpot's review. Critic Mike Mahardy praised its "fantastic Horde mode" and "creative new versus modes," but he found the campaign to be lackluster with a "shallow storyline and writing."

Watch the New Pokemon Generations Episode Here

Last week's Pokemon Generations episode was all about Team Magma's mission to take control of Groudon and rid the world of oceans. Now, it's Team Aqua's turn to attempt a worldwide flood with Kyogre.

The episode stars Team Aqua leader Archie as he's gone mad with power, not even listening to his trusted companion, Shelly. She says that going ahead with the plan will kill everyone and thing in the world, but Archie responds by basically saying, "Nah." You can watch the episode in the embed below.

The episode, titled "The Cavern," marks the eighth episode released of Pokemon Generations so far. The series focuses on the classic moments, characters, and locations in Pokemon video games and giving them a new perspective. So far, we've seen episodes that revolve around the police chasing down Team Rocket, your rival's battle with the Elite Four, and a dragon master's infiltration of a Team Rocket base.

You can expect 10 more episodes of the animated series to release through December 23.

2016 marks 20 years since Pokemon started, and to celebrate the occasion, there have been a bunch of games and videos released this year. Pokemon Red, Blue, and Yellow were made available on the 3DS eShop earlier this year, while Pokemon Go launched in July, surpassing 500 million downloads and topping the sales charts.

In addition to that, a pretty awesome ad aired during the Super Bowl, and a fan recently created their own commercial. It captures childhood memories of Pokemon perfectly, and it might even make you cry.

Players can look forward to Pokemon Sun / Moon, which releases on November 18. A demo of the upcoming game is available on the 3DS eShop right now.

We recently got the opportunity to talk to Pokemon developers Junichi Masuda and Shigeru Ohmori about legendaries, Pokemon Go, and whether or not they should reset the number of Pokemon.

PSA: Fallout 4 Is $30 Right Now on PS4, Xbox One, and PC

Bethesda's Fallout 4, one of the best games of 2015, is currently marked down significantly. Across all platforms--PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC--you can get the role-playing game for only $30.

Not only is the game on sale, but its DLC and season pass are also discounted. The season pass, which normally goes for $50, is discounted to $33.50 on all platforms. Additionally, all of the individual content, including Automatron ($6.70), Contraptions Workshop ($3.50), Far Harbor ($16.74), Nuka-World ($13.39), Vault-Tec Workshop ($3.34), and Wasteland Workshop ($3.34) is on sale.

No Caption Provided

Additionally, Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas are discounted to $7.50 on Xbox 360 and $5 on PC; DLC for those games is also on sale. On Steam, Fallout, Fallout 2, and Fallout Tactics: Brotherhood of Steel can be had for $5 each. The PC offers expire on Tuesday, October 25 at 10 AM PT / 1 PM ET. The Xbox offers are good through October 24, while the PlayStation deals end on October 25.

Fallout 4's DLC campaign wrapped up with August's Nuka-World expansion. No new games in the series have been announced or even hinted at, though we'd be surprised if Fallout 5 never happens.

In other news about Bethesda games, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim was shown in the Nintendo Switch reveal trailer, but the game is not confirmed for the platform. Bethesda is one of the dozens of partners that Nintendo named for Switch earlier this week.

Bungie Helps Two Game Devs Get Engaged With Custom Destiny Content

A pair of game developers got engaged today in an incredibly adorable way, thanks to Bungie and Destiny.

Vlambeer's Rami Ismail (Nuclear Throne) and Adriel Wallick (who formerly worked at Fire Hose Games and helped put together the Indie Megabooth) shared the news on Twitter today. Wallick proposed in Destiny using several pieces of custom content put together by Bungie. This included a special emote that let her go down on one knee, an Artifact called Ring of Eternity, and a letter at the postmaster that popped the question.

No Caption Provided
Gallery image 1 Gallery image 2 Gallery image 3

Ismail tweeted each of these out as he encountered them, confirming he did say yes. Wallick subsequently thanked Bungie, specifically calling out marketing producer Poria Torkan, who "somehow managed to convince an entire team at Bungie to dedicate time and effort to such a dorky proposal."

In what's now a much more meaningful pair of tweets from earlier today, Ismail and Wallick pointed out how sad she was when today's DDoS attacks prevented them from signing into Destiny on PS4. "I told you all that you had no idea how sad I was at this DDoS attack," she added after the proposal.

It's not the first time we've seen people get engaged in a game before, or even in a way connected to Destiny. BioWare also helped a couple get engaged back in 2014. Valve, meanwhile, embraced its romantic side by releasing a "basically useless" $100 engagement ring for Team Fortress 2 in 2012. This can be given to another person, causing all online players to be notified of the engagement if the proposal is accepted.

Watch Skyrim Remastered Gameplay Footage Here [UPDATE]

[UPDATE X3] Bethesda has now released an official trailer for the Skyrim Special Edition. Check it out in the embed above.

The original story is below

More footage of the upcoming The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim remaster, the Special Edition, will be shown during a video broadcast scheduled for later today, October 20.

Live With YouTube Gaming has announced that it will show off the "first live let's play" of the game during the broadcast that will take place tonight at 5 PM PT / 8 PM ET. It's not immediately clear what part of the game will be shown, but we'll report back with the footage and more details later.

The Skyrim remaster launches on October 28 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. The game recently achieved "gold" status, meaning development on it was completed.

The PC version (see the full system requirements here) supports mods, while the console versions will do so for the first time (yes, including the PS4 version). Keep in mind, the PC version is free for anyone who owns the game and its three DLC packs. You can also buy the DLC packs you're missing at a discount to get your hands on Special Edition.

The Special Edition also features a wide array of visual improvements, including remastered art and effects, volumetric lighting, dynamic depth of field effects, and more. Those playing on PS4 Pro when that system launches next month will be able to __play in 4K.
