Con Air Director's Blob Remake Will Tell the Backstory of The Blob

The Blob remake currently in the works will reportedly be a "more sci-fi" take on the classic monster tale, with it going deeper into the science of where the blob comes from and how it works.

Earlier this year, news broke that the Con Air and Expendables 3 director Simon West was . Now West has discussed his vision of the remake with , promising a "more sophisticated" blob along the lines of Alien and Predator.

West plans to delve into the backstory, saying, "Yeah, it's definitely going to be on a much bigger canvas than the originals, which were much more small, niche genre horror movies." West added, "My version of The Blobs going to be more sci-fi."

The remake will be "much more science-based, the way Jurassic Park made you believe you could bring back dinosaurs with a bit of DNA from a mosquito," said West. "This will be much more explained on where the blob comes from and how it works. It'll be a much more sophisticated creature - because it is a monster movie rather than a horror in that sense."

The original Blob flim starred Steve McQueen as he battled a gelatinous alien mass. A sequel came out in 1972, and the original movie saw a remake in 1988, where The Blob was transformed into a biological weapon created by the military.

It appears West's version of The Blob will be closer to the original film, with his being more of an alien invasion movie. "This thing's come from another planet, and also, we don't know how many there are," said West.

Filming is expected to start this summer.
