Original story: Blizzard has announced a new Tavern Brawl type for Hearthstone that is set to launch in place of the regular weekly event on Wednesday, October 19. It's called a Heroic Tavern Brawl, and it costs $10 or 1000 in-game gold to enter with the chance of huge rewards.

Normally, Tavern Brawls have rules that offer a goofy twist on the collectible card game, such as only being able to build an entire deck out of two cards. However, the Heroic Brawl puts a focus on competition and is more like the Standard game. Players build a deck out of any cards and then try to win 12 times with it. If you lose three games, you're out.

The $10 risk you take when entering the Brawl can pay dividends if you win enough. Reaching 12 wins scores you 50 packs of cards, 1095 Arcane Dust, 1105 gold, and three golden Legendary cards. However, you'll get something for your time, no matter how you perform.

The rewards are performance-based: the more you win before losing three games, the greater your prize. Blizzard told GamesBeat that getting knocked out before winning even a single game earns you a single pack of cards and nothing else. A single pack costs 100 gold, so there's quite a bit at stake when taking part in this week's Brawl. You can listen to Hearthstone designers Dan Emmons and Pat Nagle talk about the new type of Brawl in the video below.

Hearthstone saw a patch last month that nerfed Shaman and Yogg-Saron. Blizzard noted that Shaman had been the most-played class, as it was particularly powerful. The developer said it doesn't mind classes "fluctuat[ing] in power level," but it wants the game to "always feel like there are a wide variety of decks to __play with and against."
