Nintendo Believes Mobile Games Will Lead to More Console Fans

Nintendo president and CEO Satoru Iwata believes that Nintendo intellectual property introduced to users through its deal with Japanese mobile provider DeNa will lead to new interest in Nintendo's dedicated gaming systems.

In an Time, Iwata said that Nintendo IP on smart devices will "become an opportunity for the great number of people around the world" who may not own a Wii U or a 3DS to "to be interested in Nintendo IP and eventually to become fans."

Nintendo sees its IP on mobile as bridging the gap between smart devices and its consoles. He believes Nintendo will be able to take advantage of the mobile space in a unique way that will further Nintendo IP as a whole.

Iwata stated that he never intended to dismiss mobile gaming, but said that the demand for games in the mobile space is "for very accessible games which smart device users can easily start and easily finish." Because of this style of game Iwata sees as best fitting on mobile devices, he made clear in the interview that Nintendo doesn't think it should port its games to mobile devices.

"Doing so will not fully satisfy the needs of the smart device consumers," he said, adding "w will develop brand new software which perfectly matches the play style and control mechanisms of smart devices."
