Gears of War Movie Is Officially Happening (Again)

During an ongoing livestream for Gears of War 4 livestream, The Coalition's Rod Fergusson confirmed that a Gears of War movie is officially on the way.

The movie will be a collaboration between Microsoft and Universal. There were essentially no details shared beyond that; Fergusson admitted it's still very early and that they aren't ready to announce a director or writer on the project.

He did share some high-level details, talking about how the goal is not necessarily to copy over the story from a Gears game. Instead, Fergusson said they want to make the best Gears movie possible rather than one which is the most faithful to the games.

Fergusson teased a possible movie earlier this year. Asked about the possibility in July, he replied, "There is some stuff going on that I can't talk about today, but I'll possibly be talking about [that stuff] very soon. I'm very excited about what the future holds."

This isn't the first time that the idea for a Gears of War movie has come up. Back in 2007, New Line Cinema purchased the rights to make a movie based on the game, and the project got a writer and producers. However, the film ran into development troubles and has been in limbo ever since. In late 2012, reports suggested that it had been revived, but there hasn't been much news since then.
