New Pokemon Go Feature Gives Catch Bonuses, Here's How It Works

After teasing some "exciting features and changes" for Pokemon Go, developer Niantic has now revealed a new feature that gives players a "catch bonus" for earning certain medals.

In a blog post, Niantic explained that you'll receive the bonus when you earn medals based on catching certain types of Pokemon; Kindler, Psychic, and Gardener were called out as examples in the post. The bonuses will increase your odds of capturing creatures of a related type.

"For example, as you reach a higher tier for the Kindler Medal, your bonus to catch Fire-type Pokemon such as Charmander, Vulpix, and Ponyta increases," Niantic explained.

"Trainers can work their way to a new tier by catching many Pokemon of the same type," the developer added. "If a Pokemon has multiple types, your bonus will be the average of your bonuses for each type. For example, Pidgey is both Normal and Flying type. Your bonus in this case would be the average of your Normal-type and Flying-type bonuses."

This feature is "coming soon" to Pokemon Go, though a specific release date was not announced. For now, you can see what the feature looks like in the image gallery above.

In September, the CEO of The Pokemon Company teased a multiplayer battle mode for Pokemon Go. This could be one of the "exciting features" discussed by Niantic, though this not confirmed.

Pokemon Go launched in July and took the world by storm--it's reached a staggering 500 million downloads and reportedly still brings in $2 million every day. Even The Pokemon Company was not expecting it to be such a hit, as CEO Tsunekazu Ishihara said the reaction was "10 times or even 100 times bigger than we expected." The game has also led to significant increases in Pokemon game and trading card sales.
