Skullgirls on PS4 and Vita has a new name, and a load of new features.
Skullgirls 2nd Encore, as it’s known, features a fully-voiced cast, starring a wealth of anime voice actors. You can read the full cast listing over on the official Skullgirls .
In terms of what’s new to the PS4 and Vita versions, there’s a challenge mode in which players face off against opponents under unique conditions, such as not being able to jump. Trials are said to test the player’s skill by having them perform combos. The aim here is to help players learn combos easily via the new “button-by-button instructional system.”
Next up is survival mode, which - as the name on the tin suggests - sets players against an endless amount of enemies: how long ‘til you drop? The better the player, the more health is recovered in between rounds.
Keen to avoid fragmenting the player base, Skullgirls 2nd Encore features cross-play, allowing PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, and Vita owners to battle one another regardless of the platform.
Amazingly, 2nd Encore on PS4 will offer support for PS3 fightsticks thanks to one John “Cowboy” Bellomy. Furthermore, NetherRealm licensed this support, which explains why fightsticks work on PS4.
If that’s not enough, Skullgirls 2nd Encore also comes with cross-buy functionality. So if you buy it on Vita, you get the PS4 version and vice-versa, although the Vita version may be released a little later than its PS4 counterpart. If you pre-order in the coming months, you’ll get a free PS4 theme.
No release date has been set, but you can expect it to ship at .
In the meantime, you should of the PS3 version. In it we said: “While light on content, the core play in Skullgirls works beautifully on numerous levels. Astounding animation dresses up its solid basics and the roster provides plenty of possibilities for strategies and play styles. And for those looking for real competition, both local and online multiplayer run smoothly.”
“One can only hope that Skullgirls meets a warm reception from the fighting game community and prospers in the years to come.”
