The Xbox One's backwards compatibility program has brought many Xbox 360 titles over to the current-gen platform, and performance increases have even been seen by some games such as Red Dead Redemption and Call of Duty 2. Now, tech outlet Digital Foundry has analyzed how Call of Duty: World at War runs on the Xbox One, and the results are positive.
World at War on 360 has trouble keeping its frame rate at 60 FPS in some cutscenes, dropping below 30 FPS at times due to effects that push the engine's limits. During gameplay, World at War stays at 60 FPS more often, though drops still occur in demanding moments.
Digital Foundry says that the Xbox One is a smoother experience with frame rate drops that appear less frequently. In some moments, it can drop to 30 FPS and cause some obvious stutter, but the experience is largely smoother than that on the Xbox 360.
The popular Zombies mode was introduced in World at War, and Digital Foundry's analysis says that performance on both consoles isn't impacted as much when shooting the undead as it is when fighting enemy soldiers. Despite this, the small drops that Xbox 360 does experience are not present on the Xbox One.
"Overall then, running Call of Duty: World at War on Xbox One does indeed give us a nice uptick in performance," Digital Foundry's David Bierton said in the video above. "While not all the frame rate drops are eliminated, the smaller ones are dealt with nicely and the game spends more time hitting that important 60 FPS. And as a result, the experience is smoother across a general run of play"
Call of Duty: World at War launched on the Xbox One backwards compatibility program this week. It originally released in 2009 and received a score of 8.5/10 in GameSpot's review. Critic Chris Watters said, "By staying largely true to the formula that made Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare so successful, Call of Duty: World at War has ensured a proven level of technical quality, particularly in the multiplayer arena. On the other hand, one of Modern Warfare's strengths was its fresh approach, and by embracing a familiar setting and familiar mechanics, World at War achieves greatness but falls short of excellence."
There are more than 250 Xbox 360 games playable on Xbox One through the backwards compatibility program. You can see the full list of games here.
