The original PC version of Mortal Kombat X had a troubled launch. A patch that promised "huge improvements" was announced and was said to "literally [bring] the PC version to parity with the console versions," according to Boon. However, it ended up wiping players' save data before getting pulled. And when the Mortal Kombat XL edition was initally revealed, it was announced that PC players would be left out, with no version coming to the platform.

Mortal Kombat X on consoles received a score of 8/10 in GameSpot's review. Critic Peter Brown said, "Mortal Kombat X's lesser elements exist outside the most important part of the game: the fighting. A great roster with a wide range of diverse fighting styles and variations gives you plenty to play around with, and the new fighting mechanics add the right amount of depth to nudge Mortal Kombat X ever higher on the list of respectable fighting games."
